As a geographer and geoinformatics scientist my main passion is to observe and quantify how our Earth was shaped, how the geography defines landscapes, and how our Earth is still evolving. Photography is not my main job, but whenever possible you will find my outside with my camera taking photographs of the nature and the landscapes around me.
Nobody looks at photographs of landscapes!
This is what I hear a lot. My fasciation about landscape photography is its possibility to document how a landscape was at a specific time. There are many changes that influences landscapes. They changes may be cyclic and repeating, such as seasons, or may be permanent and even destructive. Next year, another house may be built, while in 100 years, the landscape will certainly be completely different.
A snapshot in space and time.
Since I was a child, I look at old photographs and imagined how it was living at that time or how it would be being there. Many times I used a magnifying glass to catch the details and I am grateful that someone took these photographs.
My goal.
My goal is not to create many images and share them every day on social media. My goal is to create good images that can survive decades and tell someone in the future about how we lived and how our landscape was today.
A photograph of the Watzmann mountain in Berchtesgaden in Spring 2023. The settlement in the valley is changing, it is even possible to see a construction crane witness how a new building is built. On the mountain on the left side is the famous "eagle's nest".
A photograph that I consider as useful and good is one that allows exactly this viewing experience: being able to get an overview about a landscape but also be able to discover all the details, perhaps with a magnifying glass as well.
Photography is my tool to achieve this and I use it in a specific way: Photographs showing the landscape and environmental context in which a subject is located. My photographs were not edited in any way that would alter landscape features or characteristics.
